Buying Luxury Watches in Dubai: New, Unworn and Pre-Owned

Dubai Marina skyline across the water in daylight

Dubai has a substantial luxury watch retail and pre-owned market, and the same reference can appear in an authorised boutique, a dealer’s showcase and an Instagram listing at three different prices. To buy well here, find out which of three states the watch is in (new, unworn or pre-owned), check who is selling it, and compare the total cost rather than the price in dirhams.

The general inspection checklist for pre-owned watches is in buying a pre-owned luxury watch. This page covers what is particular to Dubai.

How the Dubai luxury watch market is organised

Three kinds of seller trade side by side:

  • Authorised boutiques and retailers in malls and hotels sell new watches from the brand’s network.
  • Dealers trade new, unworn and pre-owned watches from several brands, from shops in malls, Dubai Marina, Gold and Diamond Park on Sheikh Zayed Road and other districts.
  • Online and social media sellers list watches on marketplaces, classified sites and Instagram, often with delivery across the UAE.

Many dealers keep a physical shop, because buyers in Dubai often want to see a watch in person before they pay. Searches for Dubai watches are dominated by dealers such as The Watch House, Luxury Souq and Time Secret, alongside classified listings. [Names from signed-out Google results for UAE, 1 Oct 2026. New, unworn and pre-owned in Dubai

New, unworn and pre-owned describe different transaction histories, and Dubai listings do not always say which applies. If a listing is unclear, ask when the watch was first sold, whether it has been worn and when the guarantee began.

StateMeaningWhat to ask
NewOffered as new; should never have been sold to a customerWho supplied it, has it been sold before, and is the guarantee dated from your purchase?
UnwornSold before but not worn, often with stickers still onWhen was it first sold, and when did the guarantee start?
Pre-ownedWorn by a previous ownerWhat is the condition, what is included, and when was it serviced?

Price follows state. An unworn watch of a hard-to-get model can sell above the retail price of a new one, and below it when demand is weak. A pre-owned watch usually costs less than an unworn one of the same reference, with condition and completeness explaining the gap.

Are luxury watches cheaper in Dubai?

Not reliably. Authorised retail prices are set for the UAE market, popular models are often hard to buy at retail, and the pre-owned market sets its own prices. A visitor from the UK who brings the watch home may owe import VAT on arrival, which can cancel the refund. The outcome depends on the exact watch, the exchange rate and the buyer’s home country, and the Thailand, Dubai and UK comparison shows how to work it out.

How to check a luxury watch dealer in Dubai

In Dubai, check the dealer before you check the watch. These questions cover most of what matters:

  • Is there a physical address you can visit, and how long has the business traded?
  • Does it hold a trade licence? Mainland licences in Dubai can be looked up through the Department of Economy and Tourism, and businesses in free zones are licensed and checked separately.
  • Will the invoice give the reference, serial number, condition and a statement that the watch is genuine?
  • What are the return and refund terms in writing?
  • Does the dealer permit an independent inspection? (The criteria are in the pre-owned buying guide.)
  • Are there independent reviews you can read?

Dubai dealers who trade from a shop make this easy to test: a visit usually tells you more than a dozen listings.

The tourist VAT refund on a Dubai purchase

Non-resident tourists can claim back part of the UAE’s 5% VAT on purchases from registered retailers. The scheme refunds 87% of the VAT paid, less a small fixed fee. The minimum is AED 250 per transaction, the invoice must be validated at departure within 90 days, and goods may have to be shown if asked. Goods sent by cargo do not qualify. The refund covers UAE tax only, so check what your home country will charge before you buy. The full position is in travelling with a luxury watch.

Seeing the watch in person

Many Dubai dealers trade from a showroom, and a visit is the quickest way to judge a seller. Ask to see the watch in daylight, ask how the dealer grades condition and what that grade means in practice, and compare the papers with the watch on the spot. A dealer who explains the grading plainly and puts it on the invoice is giving you something you can hold them to.

Shipping the watch home

Buyers who do not want to carry a watch sometimes ask the dealer to ship it. In the UAE the tourist VAT refund requires you to take the goods out with you when you leave, so goods sent through a cargo service do not qualify. Shipping abroad also brings the destination country’s customs rules into play, which travelling with a luxury watch sets out, and a tracked, insured service that needs a signature is the minimum for a watch of this value.

Selling or consigning a watch in Dubai

Some Dubai dealers also buy watches outright or take them on consignment, which means they sell the watch for you and keep a share. Offers differ, so ask more than one dealer and compare how each prices, pays and handles the watch. The routes are compared in selling a luxury watch.

Questions people ask

Are pre-owned watches worth buying in Dubai?

They can be, when the seller is accountable and the price reflects the watch’s condition and documents. A physical business address and written terms give you identifiable details to hold on to if a dispute arises, which a private seller on Instagram may not.

What is the difference between unworn and new?

A new watch has never been sold to a customer. An unworn watch has been sold before but not worn, so its guarantee may have started earlier and its market value can differ from a new one.

Is it safe to buy a watch in Dubai as a tourist?

It is as safe as the seller you choose. Use a dealer with a verifiable address, get an invoice that names the reference and serial number, and keep every document.
